New house : ready for drywall tomorrow #

Sunday, March 2, 2025 at 5:15 PM

Me and my dad did today :

- install the boxes for the smoke detectors
- attach some cables to the structure
- install the 10 feet HDMI cable in the wall between my office and my TV
- attach cables and mark where to drill the holes in the drywall for our antique phones and motion detectors

Yesterday we did :

- install a phone line for my mom's fax
- solidify the air return in my mom's office
- I soldered every junction for the central vacuum

My dad will be at the new house tomorrow morning. He will then come back to our current house to bring me there after I finish work.

The quest #

Monday, March 3, 2025 at 4:55 PM

To know if there is something beyond us and what are its attributes.

Is it good ? (God) Is it logical ? (science)

It can be both.

I wanted to say more last night but forgot it all. I should have written then.

New house : drywall begun #

Monday, March 3, 2025 at 5:01 PM

They did the bedroom downstairs.

They also did my office and my mom's office on the second floor.

I tested the network plugs and they all test OK.

This is a photo of the guest room.

New house : drywall continued #

Tuesday, March 4, 2025 at 5:28 PM

They said it would take five days to do the drywall. They will be done tomorrow after three days.

They also over-estimated the number of sheets of drywall needed. Like by 60 or something.

I helped my dad finish the tubing for the home theatre's speakers.

We had planned to insulate the wall of the home theatre with green insulation (for sound), but we only had 24" insulation and the studs are 16" apart. It would have created too much waste. And we probably would not have had enough.

So we just moved the outlets and switches half an inch away from the studs so they can put up two sheets of drywall on that side of the wall. (So three (or four, I'm not sure) sheets in total will be on that wall).

16 cardboard plates #

Wednesday, March 5, 2025 at 3:36 PM

I just made 16 cardboard plates to protect my network outlets from the dust, plaster and paint.

You can also see the "box". It attaches to the stud and the two "c"s are then bent.

My future office #

I took those pictures two days ago.

On the third picture, you can see the doors of my office to the left and my mom's office to the right. My TV will be left of my door. My bedroom and bathroom are behind the camera.

Fucking morons #

Thursday, March 6, 2025 at 3:18 PM

How stupid and disrespectful can you be ?

My dad cuts a hole in the wall, and we find garbage !

This very probably means that there is garbage in other walls.

Our general contractor will be hearing about this.

They weren't even big pieces of drywall. There is a container outside in which you can toss garbage through the window on the same floor we found the garbage.

More disrespect #

Thursday, March 6, 2025 at 3:32 PM

When we entered the new house, it was like a sauna.

We have a few space heaters for the workers.

But the drywall guys turn them to the max and when they leave, they do not turn them back down.

And we get stuck with the bill.

(Our electricity bill is in the thousands per month since we wired the space heaters)

It's disgusting.

I'm so excited ! #

Saturday, March 8, 2025 at 8:05 PM

I just set up an old printer and print server on macOS and Windows.

I have an HP LaserJet 3050 connected into a DPR-1260 print server.

The old setup had our computers print to my main server (with CUPS) which then printed on the print server.

Now, I have our computers connect directly to the print server. It's way faster now.

On macOS, it was a breeze :

I manually setup an "HP Jetdirect" IP printer with the "HP LaserJet Series PCL 4/5" driver.

On Windows 10, it was waaaay harder.

I had to manually configure the printer. Tell Windows to communicate with the "raw" protocol on port 9100 (which can be changed somewhere I forgot). I also had to click "Windows Update" and wait a few minutes before being able to select the "HP LaserJet 3050 Series PCL 5e" driver.

I can scan #

Today, I also plugged an old printer/scanner into our old print server.

Now we can scan documents through the print server's webpage.

Old New Space Heaters #

Tuesday, March 11, 2025 at 5:00 PM

Me and my dad removed the three new space heaters we had at the new house and replaced them with old ones.

(In preparation for the coming dust from sanding the plaster).

The plastering was to start on Monday, but the workers were late on another job. They were not here today either.

I broke the chalumeau #

Thursday, March 13, 2025 at 1:39 PM

I tapped the maple tree in our backyard. As I do every year.

This is our last year at that house. I wanted to tap it one last time.

I make maple syrup with it.

Unfortunately, I broke the chalumeau while hammering it into the tree. The cover fell on the ground. I fixed it with a zip-tie.

We've had that chalumeau and bucket for years.

Sorry, I did not take a picture. My phone was inside and it's a long walk to the other end of our backyard.

An alternative to becoming rich #

Thursday, March 13, 2025 at 6:18 PM

Having money means that others have a debt with you and are ready to do things for you for that money.

The alternative would be to get people to do things for you without the money.

Hannah Montana #

Friday, March 14, 2025 at 8:08 PM

These days I'm rewatching all Hannah Montana episodes and movies.

I lowered the bitrate of every one to 300 kb/s two days ago.

Today I added the two movies in the episode list according to when they were released.

http://www.mileystewart.net/

I had to modify my "tv" PHP script I've been using for a lot of my series. I last changed that script in 2023.

To me, it's just a way of letting your subconscious express itself.

When you are above where you think it is, you move your hands.

If it works, it's because your subconscious was right.

Personally, I prefer practicing using my conscious self : just point to where I think it is with my finger.

You can see the tie-wrap I used to attach the lid to the broken chalumet.

Voyager Golden Record and the quest #

Sunday, March 16, 2025 at 4:33 PM

It basically requires aliens to build a TV :

- They have to know about math.
- They have to know about electricity and use it the same way we do with wires.
- They have to have an oscilloscope.
- They have to know about pixels.
- They have to be able to see and hear.
- Their sight has to be able to understand the strange shapes we drew on the disc.

I'm pretty sure if romans or egyptians got that disc, they wouldn't know what to do with it.

Although it dosen't say much about us to aliens, it does say how we want to be known. That we're not alone. That there is something bigger than us that could bring us together.

Mathematicians and physicists want the world we cannot see to be logical. Be made of rules. That natures follows some logic. The same way religious people want the world we cannot see to be good and bad. To me, God is just a personification of nature's goodness. That good drives the world and benefits us. And science is trying to find a model that is as close as possible to what we can see. Logic for the invisible. The world can be both good and logical. It's not one or the other.

TV : well supported #

Monday, March 17, 2025 at 3:03 PM

Yesterday, me and my dad went to the new house to unscrew some drywall and add supports where I want my 42" TV.

This is the wall between my office and my living room.

We had to do this before the plaster today.

Hannah Montana: The Movie #

I just rewatched it.

It's just not the same as when I first saw it five or six years ago.

I was slightly less excited this time.

But I still think it's a great movie.

One hell of a clog #

Thursday, March 27, 2025 at 3:26 PM

I noticed the last few weeks that I had problems hearing other people talking.

It turned out that both of my ears were clogged solid with earwax.

We bought a spray nozzle on Amazon to fix that. It arrived today.

I did it one ear at a time. After a few minutes of spraying, the massive clogs came out.

Here is the one from my left ear and a photo of the sprayer.

I hear so much better. I hear so much more things.
