Windows 98 : working display ! #

Saturday, July 1, 2023 at 7:14 PM

I just installed this driver and was finally able to set a resolution of 1280x800.

https://bearwindows.zcm.com.au/vbe9x.htm

I used the "128mb" folder.

My laptop is a ThinkPad R61i.

Here is how I selected the driver :

- Right click the desktop and click Properties.
- Settings > Advanced > Adapter tab > Change
- Point Windows to the 128mb folder.
- Reboot
- Set the resolution.

Windows 98 : Wi-Fi works ! #

Tuesday, July 4, 2023 at 4:25 PM

I just got Wi-Fi to work on Windows 98 SE.

The only problem is that I must disable the password on my network.

I dedicated a router for this computer and configured it so that it only accepts my PC's MAC address.

Wi-Fi is easier than Ethernet, go figure.

(I would still prefer to use Ethernet)

I only had to install the driver for my PCMCIA Wi-Fi card and enter the SSID in the network settings in Control Panel.

IE5 CSS borders #

Wednesday, July 12, 2023 at 3:55 PM

When you set a border to the <body>, the border is attached to the browser's UI and is outside the scrollbar.

On modern browsers, the <body> border is inside the scrollbar and the bottom part of the border is only visible if you scroll to the end of the page.

In IE5, the bottom part of the border is always visible.

Here is a screenshot of my website's blue border.

Self-driving cars #

Instead of having the cars drive themselves, what about having the cars be driven by random people online with video game controllers.

Random people driving random cars.

It might just work.

Time travel #

Wednesday, July 12, 2023 at 5:23 PM

I find time travel much easier to understand if you look at it from the environment's perspective instead of the traveler's perspective.

Here's an example from a house's perspective :

- There is a house, it is empty.
- Someone from the future suddenly appears and says hello.
- That person disappears and goes back to the future.
- The younger version of the person enters the house through the front door.
- That person disappears and goes back into the past.
- The person comes back from the past.

If you look at time travel from the environment's perspective, there are no paradoxes.

If you look at time travel from the traveler's perspective, some people will imagine two pasts :
- One where the guy from the future is not there.
- One where the guy from the future is there.

This messes everything up.

Oh, and I find completely retarded the theory where every choice we do as a human creates a parallel universe.

Even if you make a choice, the chemical reactions in your brain can have only one outcome.

The way I see it, there is only one path and everything can only go one way.

Facebook is not part of the Internet #

Wednesday, July 12, 2023 at 5:31 PM

Remember that Facebook is competing the Internet and is not a part of it.

It is not a website.

They have a website on the Internet only to give people access to their Internet-competing "network".

It annoys me when people use the term "Internet" instead of "Facebook".

They used to talk about "Internet addiction" when in reality they were talking about "Facebook addiction".

"Social media" annoys me too. Can't we be honest and call things what they are.

Don't say "social media", say "Facebook".

Things lost #

Chainsaw #

Sunday, July 23, 2023 at 2:01 PM

Our chainsaw starts well, but as soon as we give it gas, it puffers and dies.

We already changed the gas, added chain oil and sanded the spark plug.

It still doesn't work well.

Next step is to look at the "Troubleshooting" part of the manual.

Second shower #

Sunday, July 23, 2023 at 2:08 PM

Over the past few months, my dad has been building the second bathroom.

Yesterday, me, my dad and my mom installed the big glass pane for the shower and my dad put the silicone.

The shower is rectangle.

Two walls are tiled, one is made of glass and one is left open.

The hardware is on the small tiled wall and its opposite is open.

Looking at the shower hardware, the left wall is glass and the right one is tiled.

Today, we tested the hardware. We want to make sure that splashes do not escape the shower.

The rain shower is OK and the telephone shower is OK too.

But the "normal" shower splashes water everywhere and escapes the shower.

We failed to get our gasoline chainsaw to work.

We changed the fuel filter and the spark plug and it still doesn't work properly.

It starts, but it dies as soon as we give it gas.

My dad bought a new electric chainsaw on Amazon.

We should get it tomorrow.

Hopefully, it will work better.
