ATV winch relay #

Sunday, June 5, 2022 at 4:35 PM

On May 25, we replaced the winch relay on our ATV.

The wires were all chewed up (probably by mice) and even after fixing them, the relay contacts were not working.

So we bought a new one on Amazon and it works well.

Before we replaced the relay, the winch did not work well at all.
The relay would click but the winch wouldn't turn.

Anyway, the winch is fixed now.
Next time we need it it will work.

I've watched Shrek 1, 2 and 3.

It's weird how it seems like every DreamWorks movie ends the same way, with everyone singing and dancing to some popular tune.

Errors, Errors, Errors #

Wednesday, June 8, 2022 at 12:29 PM

For my job, I'm currently working on a web application.

But I keep having errors that prevent me from working.

Sometimes, it's a DNS error (NXDOMAIN).
Sometimes, it's a 503 error (that applies to PHP only, not to text files, go figure).
Sometimes, it's an SQL error between the web server and the MySQL server.
(But I can still access the MySQL server in MySQL Workbench)
Sometimes, it's the DHTMLX calendar widget that is empty ; reloading a couple times usually brings it back.
Sometimes, it's the FTP server that stops responding to Dreamweaver.

Right now, I'm stuck with the 503 error.

At 1pm, I'll be calling my supervisor and telling him (I've already told him, but the errors are getting more and more frequent)

Last friday, I made a big number that covers the entire screen with a transparent gray background. Since the web application is made with AngularJS, every HTTP request goes through $http. So I intercepted every call to $http(...).then(...); and show the number of parallel requests. If it displays 5, it means that there are 5 simultaneous requests. You can see the number go up and then down. This code I wrote also allows me to centralize the error pop-ups. Now, whenever a 503 or SQL error happens, I get a pop-up with the error message. It's been a while since I developed code of this complexity.
Unrelated, I'm glad I fixed every bug in the error.log Before, I would get dozens of errors per request. Now, I get none.
Also unrelated, even if they are paying a hosting company for the MySQL server, they are accessing it with a *.dynalias.com address. Usually theses services are for when you want a domain name to point to a dynamic IP address. Since they are paying a hosting company, I would have thought that they would have a static IP address. I was not given a clear answer about that. My supervisor told me they use this *.dynalias.com domain name so that they don't have to remember the IP address. Which is not an answer at all (I wan't asking why they were using a domain name at all, just why they were using a *.dynalias.com one)

City of Ember #

Wednesday, June 8, 2022 at 7:09 PM

I just watched it again, I like it.

Flaws :

- Where does the 'want' of exiting Ember come from ?

- Why only one generator for the entire city ?

- Why all this noise on every blackout ?

- Why make the exit instructions be a secret to be revealed 200 years later in a metal box.

- I would have thought that those instructions don't have to be secret.

- And most of all : Why create an underground city to wait for the outside world to get better when you can just make the world better.

Server problems #

Sunday, June 12, 2022 at 11:54 AM

When i logged into my server today, it told me it needed a reboot (new linux version).

So I start the reboot...

After the 'boot logo', the screen went black.
I waited and it was still black.

So I plugged in my keyboard and managed to reboot to the previous linux version.
That worked.

Then, I tried to unplug my keyboard, and I accidentally unplugged the power cord.

Oh God.

So I plug it back in and now it wants to boot to the new linux version.

Go figure.

That was very stressful.

Of course, before the initial reboot, I made a backup.

Server hard drive #

Sunday, June 12, 2022 at 12:09 PM

A few weeks ago, I replaced the 1 TB drive in my server with a 4 TB one.

I was running out of space on the old one.
With the new drive in place, I added a lot of my saved TV series.

http://tv.philippe97.ca/

I'm also glad I replaced the hard drive before it failed.
That's a lot less stressful.
And I also know that if it doesn't work, I can put the old drive back in.

To transfer the data, I plugged both drives with SATA cables and copied the data from one to the other.

It was also a big upgrade.
The old one was running Ubuntu Server 16.04 and the new one runs Ubuntu Server 22.04.

The transfer took a few hours.

Of course, a few of my PHP scripts stopped working (I was going from PHP 7.* to PHP 8.1).

Static IP address #

Saturday, June 25, 2022 at 1:31 PM

I found out that the company I work for has a static IP with Vidéotron.
(The PTR DNS record for the IP address ends with ".static.videotron.ca")

But they are still using a *.dynalias.com domain name instead of a subdomain of their own domain.

I don't get it.

I wonder if this could be related to the fact that I very often get an error when accessing this domain.
(My guess is that maybe dynalias momentarily forgets the IP address but I'm not sure)

(The domain is used for the MySQL database which is hosted at the office)

Microseconds #

Saturday, June 25, 2022 at 3:34 PM

When I was studying at Cégep Ste-Foy, the chemistry professor was going over the questions of an exam we had a few days earlier.

I remember one question :
"All of you answered this question correctly, except one who didn't know how many microseconds are in a second."
The whole class started laughing.

I was that one.

As of today, I still don't know how many microseconds are in a second.

(Well, I'm not sure if they were microseconds or nanoseconds anymore, but you get the point)

Are elephants afraid of mice ? #

Saturday, June 25, 2022 at 4:40 PM

I don't think so.

I saw an episode of MythBusters where they went to Africa and put a mouse in front of an elephant.

The elephant backed away and they concluded that the elephant was afraid of the mouse.

I disagree. I personally think that the elephant simply doesn't want to hurt the mouse by stepping on it.

"Oh no, a little mouse. Better be careful not to step on it."

Yesterday, we installed our 3 A/C units.

As usual, we are careful to plug them on different circuit breakers.

Mine is connected to the kitchen lights circuit, my mom's is on the one breaker that feeds half the house and my dad's is on the bathroom lights circuit.

Circuit breakers #

Monday, June 27, 2022 at 12:56 PM

A few months ago, me and my dad made a plan that says which outlet/light is connected to which circuit breaker.

It's really useful.

We also made changes after making the plan.

For example, the bathroom outlet was on the same circuit as my computers.

This means that whenever my mom was drying her hair, the breaker would trip and my computers would turn off.

Now the outlet is on its own breaker.

Since then, I've also installed a UPS for my computers.
